The Synod approved the printing of such a hymnal in 1921 and the hymnal was published in 1922. This was the first Chinese hymnal for Taiwan. The Taiwanese edition was published in 1926. This hymnal was the first one used throughout Taiwan, 2000 copies in the south and 1000 copies in the north. The content was mainly based on "Yang-Tsin-Shen-Shih" and "The Hymn Book", with additional pages of information such as the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, etc.; the hymns were divided into 14 categories, with a total of 192 hymns.
In 1932, the 20th anniversary of the Taiwan Synod, the Synod appointed the hymnody committee to make supplemental changes of the hymnal. The committee was consisted of 8 members. They were responsible for editing and printing the so called'Old Hymnal". They deleted some from the original 192 hymns and added more from the English and Japanese hymns, plus some composed by Chinese musicians. This hymnal was published on December 1, 1936, with a total of 347 hymns. When this hymnal was revised, there were 342 hymns with 14 categories, in both Chinese and Taiwanese, and with both music and lyrics.
In 1951, when the General Assembly was established, an official hymnody committee was formed; members of the committee (Yang et all, 11 people) started to edit a new hymnal. They adopted four principles: 1. 500 hymns was their target, with a revised index. 2. Select hymns well known to the Presbyterians, to meet the world standards. 3. Put an emphasis on the translation of lyrics for sound theology and poetic literature. 4. Keep the completeness of the old hymnal as long as possible. On October 1, 1959, the first volume of hymnal was published (90 hymns). On November 30, 1961, the second volume containing poetic and expatriatory psalms was published (75 hymns). Then on February 17, 1964, the third volume was published, with responsive reading part, thus producing a hymnal with a total of 523 hymns. In 1965 (the Centenary celebration of Christianity in Taiwan), the committee dedicated this new hymnal (all three volumes combined) to the General Assembly as a gift, to be used by all churches in Taiwan. It is still being used today, with Taiwanese, Chinese (Mandarin) , and music in it.
